Menopause Information for Patients
What is Menopause?
Menopause is a natural stage in a woman’s life, marking the end of menstrual periods. It usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, but it can happen earlier or later. Menopause is confirmed when you haven’t had a period for 12 months.
Perimenopause
This is the transition phase leading up to menopause, when hormone levels begin to fluctuate. It can last several years and cause a range of symptoms.
Common Symptoms
Each person’s experience is different, but typical symptoms include:
- Hot flushes and night sweats
- Changes to periods (irregular or heavier/lighter bleeding)
- Mood changes (low mood, anxiety, irritability)
- Sleep disturbances
- Vaginal dryness or discomfort
- Reduced sex drive
- Difficulty concentrating or memory problems ("brain fog")
- Joint or muscle aches
Symptoms can start months or even years before your periods stop and may continue afterwards.
Managing Menopause
Lifestyle Changes
- Healthy diet: Aim for a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D to support bone health.
- Exercise: Regular physical activity helps with mood, sleep, and heart health.
- Stopping smoking and limiting alcohol can also reduce symptoms.
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
HRT information video
HRT replaces the hormones your body stops producing. It is an effective treatment for many menopause symptoms and helps protect against osteoporosis.
There are different types of HRT available, including tablets, patches, gels, and sprays. Your GP will help you decide what’s best for you based on your symptoms, medical history, and preferences.
Non-Hormonal Treatments
For those who can’t or don’t wish to take HRT, other options are available, such as:
- Antidepressants (for hot flushes or mood symptoms)
- Vaginal moisturisers or lubricants
- Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
